Noah Barleywater on the Carnegie

Very pleased that NOAH BARLEYWATER RUNS AWAY has been longlisted for the 2012 Carnegie Medal, the most prestigious award in children’s publishing in the UK. I was previously longlisted in 2007 for The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas. The full longlist can be seen here.

Helsinki Book Fair

I’m in Helsinki for the next few days, courtesy of my Finnish publisher Bazar, to attend the Helsinki Book Fair where I will be giving interviews, readings and doing various bits of promotion for the recently published TARKOIN VARTIOITU TALO (The House of Special Purpose) and NOOA NOTKONIITTY KARKAA KOTOA (Noah Barleywater Runs Away).

If you happen to be in Helsinki and would like to hear one of the readings, public interviews or just get your book signed, check out the times on the website.

Liverpool & Birmingham

I’ve spent the last few days in Liverpool and Birmingham promoting the UK paperback edition of NOAH BARLEYWATER RUNS AWAY.

First to Formby, to open Tony Higginson’s new bookstore and read from the book on Wednesday night, then on to Birmingham to read at Halesowen, where I first visited in January 2006, the week that THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS was published.

Noah Paperback

The UK / Ireland paperback edition of NOAH BARLEYWATER RUNS AWAY is published today. It’s illustrated by Oliver Jeffers.

The hardback was published last September and reached no.1 on the Irish Bestsellers Chart. Since then, it’s been published, or is due to be published, in more than 20 languages.

You can buy the paperback from Amazon here.

Some reviews of the hardback edition:

“Timeless and imaginative. I don’t know how Boyne does it but his story is incredibly resonant.”

The Irish Times

“In this charming and cleverly plotted story that tiptoes with humor and compassion, two characters teach each other how to grieve, how to forgive, and how, eventually, to remember what has been lost.”

The New York Times

“The writing is lyrical yet spare and beautifully crafted. It’s inventive, wily and twisty. A carefully crafted, whimsical gem. A true publishing event.”

The Irish Independent

“Highly amusing, refreshingly original and extremely moving… written with such an assurance and lightness of touch… infused with such truths as to leave one with very real tears in the eyes.”

Philip Ardagh, The Guardian

“Destined to become something of a children’s classic.”

Charlie Higson, Mail on Sunday

“An audacious, reworked fairytale. It is ultimately positive, original and important and may well become a contemporary children’s classic.”

The Australian

“A beautiful and wonderfully written fairytale. Poignant, fantastical and charming.”

The Sunday Business Post

“A celebration of the consolations of storytelling. Spellbinding stuff.”

The Financial Times

“Reminicent of Roald Dahl’s writing… it is joyful and leaves one with hope, despite the darkness that can occur in life.”

New Zealand Daily Post

“Poignant and beguiling… it is written in such a poetic, sensitive and imaginative way that it leaves one feeling uplifted.”

Herald Sun (Australia)

Sheffield Children’s Book Award

I’m very happy that NOAH BARLEYWATER RUNS AWAY has been shortlisted for this year’s Sheffield Children’s Book Award. The other 2 books on the shortlist are PUT OUT THE LIGHT by Terry Deary and BILLIONAIRE BOY by David Walliams. A few years ago, THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS was also shortlisted for this prize, which has been running for over 20 years. More information on all the shortlisted books can be found here.

Learning to Draw

This is good – Oliver Jeffers teaching me to draw at our recent joint booksigning in Foyle’s.

Story Spark

I was in The Ark in Temple Bar yesterday to read from NOAH BARLEYWATER RUNS AWAY as part of Children’s Books Ireland’s fantastic Story Spark season. And what a great set to read in. It seemed very appropriate to the novel. That’s the last reading for 2010. Lots more to come in 2011 though.
