The Book Show

Roddy Doyle, Mariella Frostrup, me, Anne Enright
A nice photo from yesterday’s recording of Sky Arts The Book Show, which was filmed in Dublin to coincide with the Dublin Writers’ Festival. The episode, featuring Roddy Doyle, Anne Enright and I will be shown on Sky Arts on June 9th.
Ireland AM
I appeared on TV3′s morning show Ireland AM this morning to talk about some books for Christmas. You can watch the video here.
Entrelinhas Video
One of the television interviews I did when I was in Brazil has been posted on YouTube. There are some funny cut-ins along the way – “it’s all for one, D’Artagnan!” – also, a photograph of me with a strange expression on my face holding a collection of Philip Ardagh books in my hands!
The Book Show
I was in London a few weeks ago to record an episode of THE BOOK SHOW for Sky Arts. It’s showing all this week on the channel and you can see excerpts from the show on The Book Show’s website. As well as discussing THE HOUSE OF SPECIAL PURPOSE, I’m part of a group discussion at the end of the show with novelist Joshua Ferris and politician/writer Shirley Williams where we each choose our favourite book of the last 10 years. Joshua chose Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, I chose Rose Tremain’s The Road Home and Shirley – coincidentally – chose The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas.
BBC World Book Club
I was in London over the last day or two for a couple of interesting interviews. The first took place at Royal Festival Hall on the South Bank, an interview with the BBC World Service as part of their ‘World Book Club’ programme. This programme has been running for about 5 years and encourages people around the globe to read the same book at the same time – this month’s book was THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS. Harriett Gilbert conducted the interview and questions were taken from the audience of about 100 who were gathered to listen to the recording as well as from emails and phone questions that had come in in advance from places as far away as Nigeria, the Crimea and America. Thanks to all those who participated. The programme goes out on March 6th and will be kept on the World Service website after that.
Then, this morning, I was at Sky Arts to take part in The Books Show with Mariella Frostrup. We were discussing THE HOUSE OF SPECIAL PURPOSE, the paperback of which will be published in the UK in April. The other guests were Shirley Williams and Joshua Ferris. As well as discussing our new books, we also spoke about our favourite book of the last decade – Josh chose THE ROAD by Cormac McCarthy, I chose THE ROAD HOME by Rose Tremain and Shirley (declining to choose another ‘Road’ title) went for THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS, which was quite a surprise for me, and indeed for her as she had not realised that I was also going to be a guest on the show. But it was a tremendous honour to meet her, and Josh, whose first novel THEN WE CAME TO THE END I admired very much. That sentence seems a bit convoluted but there we are.
In other news, I was at my publisher’s office yesterday morning recording some video pieces for use on the Random House website soon and it involved me barking like a dog. This might seem strange but the reason why will be revealed soon. Towards the end of March, to be precise…
The View
I appeared as a guest on RTE Television’s arts review show The View last night where we discussed three films: Kisses, The International and Five Minutes of Heaven, as well as the art exhibition by Yinko Shonibare based on Guliver’s Travels which is currently showing at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin, and the new U2 album No Line On The Horizon.
It’s the third time I’ve appeared on the show but the first time I wore a tie – a very nice black tie with white dots that was confiscated from me just before filming as it was producing a “strobing effect” on camera! I’ll have to make sure to leave that particular tie at home if I’m invited back.
You can watch the show in full or in parts on RTE’s The View website.
Eye2Eye Recording
I spent yesterday afternoon at RTE Television Studios in Dublin filming a programme for broadcast later this year – Eye2Eye. The idea of the show is for young readers and aspiring writers to gather and ask questions of a group of authors, in this case Darren Shan, Ruth Gilligan and myself (pictured left with the show’s presenter Sinead Kennedy.) We each read from our novels as well.
A very enjoyable afternoon, livened up considerably by some very engaged and interesting young people. I’m not sure what date it’s being broadcast yet but will post on the site when it is. Thanks to all the young readers who attended the filming for making the day so worthwhile.
